Topic: Reuse and repair existing bridge structure units with Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge Systems (GRS-IBS) technology.
The founders of GeoStabilization International were involved heavily in slope stability and retaining wall research at the Colorado Department of Transportation for 30 years. Their research and others led up to the FHWA’s initiative promoting Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge Systems or GRS-IBS. With that background they began repairing bridge substructures and building bridges. They learned that many times the repair of a bridge substructure unit is a cost effective way to rehabilitate a bridge. Whether part of a superstructure replacement project, the upgrade of a bridge to remove load limits, the need to limit the impact to an environmentally sensitive stream or wetland, the need to reverse the effects of scour or prevent future scour or as a maintenance project to extend service life, there are a lot of different kinds of bridge substructure repairs that can be performed. This presentation will walk through almost a dozen projects in hopes of encouraging engineers to think creatively about how to reuse and repair existing bridge substructure units. A number of tools are used in these projects including micropiles, soil nails, different kinds of grouts, shotcrete, and GRS abutment technology either alone or in combination.
